Performance Bagger build- short exhaust vs long
The biggest thing is the exhaust though. My dealer said if I kept the SE cam and SE tune that they would have no problems warrantying the bike if I put whatever exhaust I wanted on it. My concerns are: paying extra to swap the cam out later, paying extra for the SE tune, and the potential wear and tear on the engine from the overly hot (temperature) SE tune combined with whatever may be "off" when you put a different exhaust on it. So it has me leaning towards "just do it."

you dont want to waste money after spending thousands extra on a bike for its pistons and jugs and a "117" plate, those being the first things you want to get rid of. but you dont want to pay extra for a 2nd cam swap and tune? biggest thing is the exhaust...? id be more worried about the cam and SE tuner robbing power. you seem to be all over the place. i really think you need to take a step back, read through the forums and learn, take the bike out for a while and figure out your riding style and where you want the power, and then go from there.

1- I like the chopped rear fender for a performance touring build.
2- I like the standard bags over the stretched bags for a performance touring build.
3- I much prefer the painted tank badge on the ST over the stuck on emblem on the Special.
4- I like the bronze wheels and rocker boxes.
5- I prefer the chopped front fender.
The fact that it has a 117 is incidental, and somewhat of a shame. I believe the net difference in price between a Special and an ST is $1500, assuming they both have black trim as opposed to chrome.
And you are right, I am all over the place! Because I'm trying to figure out the best direction to go. I read a ton and I am learning as I go. I really appreciate everyone's input! If it seems a little spastic, it's because I need to make a decision shortly to get this in process for this winter. I want it done for spring, which means I need to fast track some of these decisions.
I wouldnt really worry about weight with the pipe unless you care about .01 on the drag strip....If you want to strip weight, strip it where it counts...rotating mass and unsprung weight. Lighter wheels, brakes, etc will have a MUCH bigger impact than a lighter pipe.
