Ohlins HD044 vs Screamin Eagle Ohlins rear shocks?
I'll be doing the suspension on my new 2022 Road Glide this winter, trying to figure out options. Is the Ohlins HD044 setup the same thing as the Harley/Screamin Eagle setup except the color and SE branding, or are there differences between the two? The price is similar.
I know when you order from Ohlins, they ask for the specific motorcycle and weight of the rider, passenger, tour pack, and luggage weight, then assign a spring rate. I'm unsure if Harley has that option or if one spring fits all.
I just got a set of Ohlins HD 044's 2 weeks ago to replace another set of aftermarket shocks. I had called Ohlins USA and the rep (IIRC, the guys name was Jerry....really good guy), and I gave him my specs and he put did the spring weight and what not.
As I understand it, Ohlins uses a straight rate spring offered in a few different weights, while the HD setup uses a progressive spring offered in 1 spring weight. I believe the valving may be slightly different as well.
The set I received has the brackets that stick the reservoirs out the back like the HD setup too.

Keep up posted on your evaluation.
If I upgraded my 107 EG I think I would go with Wilbur, worked well on other non-HD bikes.
I think it is best to do both ends if upgrading.

Yeah, my intention would be to do both ends for sure.
I prefer the idea of going with Ohlins over HD/Ohlins due to help "dialing in" the setup from the vendors. But I'm not sure how the gold will look with the bronze accents on my ST, hence me asking about the SE Ohlins option.

You don't have to show them off. I have the 044s, and have the reservoirs hidden.
Go with the Ohlins.

Very true. The current kit comes with the HD style brackets, as well as their older brackets, which allow for hiding the reservoir behind the bags or directly behind.

I have been a Pro-Action fan for many years now. But on our 21 SGS we went with the HD SE Ohlins and love them. My wife saw them on a bike at the dealership and really liked the look. The black reservoir goes better with our theme. When they offered me a set at 20% off I said yes. I did ask about spring rates and of course the dealership had no idea. I set them up accordingly to the Ohlins program online and they do everything you would expect. I did go with Pro-Action on the front. The bike soaks up every road imperfection with ease and handles perfectly.

Pretty much what the others have said...Harley doesnt know if youre 150lbs or 400lbs, you get the spring you get. Ohlins will give you a spring for YOU. If theyre around the same money I'd definitely go right to ohlins. You can always have the canister hidden, or I've seen some anodized black, blue, red etc.
