Default hesitant to buy

I'm thinking about buying a 1996 Road King with a fuel injected Evo motor, 23,600 miles from a private party. Seller says it has been sitting since 2008 and the gas went bad in the tank so needs to replace the tank then it will run. Seems straightforward, but I'm afraid there is more to it. Seller states he took it to a shop to get it tuned up and ready to sell but ran into the tank issue and stopped. Why not just complete the job? Tank needs to be painted to match so maybe that's why? Seller is asking $7,500 in North Bay Area, CA. I'm just curious what y'all think. Thanks.

First of all: Welcome to the Forums!

Second: Sounds like the seller realized how much work it is going to take to get the bike up and running and put it up for sale to pass the problem on to the next sucker. Don't be that sucker. There are too many other bikes out there for you to have to inherit someone else's problem.

That is way too much for that bike. You should be able to get a running one that is 10 years newer for that price. Also not even counting the tank, if you have to pay the dealer to do the work it will cost $2000+ to get all the repairs and maintenance done from sitting that long.

Until it's running, it's worth scrap metal value.

Would 1996 be FI or carb?

Anyways, great first post. Welcome to the madness.

RUN AWAY from that bike.

That project bike may need up to 4000 in repairs. Tires, battery, 3 hole fluid change, brakes flushed and calipers and master cylinders rebuilt, fuel injection system removed and a carb installed and a new tank that gets sent off for paint. There is a reason he didnt get it fixed. I would be interested at the 2000 dollar mark and I would do 90% of the work myself. Find a bike that runs and has the Delphi Fuel Injection and a 6 speed. You will be money ahead.

Welcome to the family and great question
a. Theres MUCH MORE TO IT - If the tank is gone, so is the fuel system
b. In perfect running condition, its kinda fair - as it sits, its 3500 to 4k and a massive crap shoot..
