The rear brakes on my 08 RK (1,100 miles)are so noisy that people on the street stop and stare when I use them, in fact this bike has the noisiest brakes of any bike I have owned in the last Forty years.
I discussed them with a Harley Rep. at the Rapid City Convention Center two weeks ago, he mentioned that one of their deisgn and marketing Strategies for the Brembos was no noise. I have returned the bike to the dealer three times to have them fixed and will know tomorrow if they succeeded. I suggest you call Harley Customer Service and ask them to file a complaint on your brakes, with enough people complaining they just might fix the problem.
If you don't mind, post your results. I am just curious as to whether dealer will do anything about it, or just chalk it up as normal. Maybe it's time to coin a new phrase "Loud Brakes Save Lives"
Picked up the 08 RK from the dealer on Saturday, they de-glazed the rotors (Scuffed then with a Sander), the squeal went away for the first Two Hundred miles and now it's back. While cleaning the bike after the ride I noticed they also de-glazed the rear fender (a little slip with the sander) itwent backto the dealers this afternoon..
On the positive side I rode 250 miles of combination mountain and highway riding and used 4.9 gallons of gas, the six gallon tank is a real plus. The power in Sixth is beter than expected and it is much more stable in cross winds than my 99 Dyna.
There was a service bulletin on this years ago. The slots in the disc can make them squeak especially at low speed. By flip flopping the discs, right to left and left to right, you reverse the way the cutouts are and the squeaking goes away except when you brake while bacing out of the garage or similar situation.
He's right. The dealership swapped discs on my06 Road King Custom and it eliminated the noise.Don't know if that works with the newbrakes or not.
My breaks sqeak occaonally. I start up my air compressor and blow out any accumulated dust.
You would be suprised at how much crap is blown out. A queak goes away, too.
Bring it back to the dealer if the squeek is coming from the front. Strglide and eor are right, there is a recall on the front brakes because they put them on backwards. I'm not sure what to call it, but I use the term passive recall, because they will only fix this problem if you complain about it.
Short sighted greed has HD putting a few dollars before making their new bikes sound like an old piece of crap at every stop. They should fix them the minute they get them in a dealership. I was told I'd have to schedule an appointment and drop the road king off for 5 days to have this 1 hour job done. That's worse than an airport.
Bring it in, have them fix it. There is no reason a brand new 20000 dollar motorcycle should sound like a '74 Ford LTD every time you come to a stop. It's just embarassing.
I put the vivid black floating rotors and Lyndall Z pads on my '06 SG and the squeal was 100% eliminated. I did it more for performance reasons, but the side effect of not having that annoying squeal is great!
