Default scan tools

What are the recommendations on scan tool options for a 2012 103 road king. Not after anything super flash just want to do basic maintenance. Car ones can be had very cheap just wonder why bar adding Harley to the paperwork! [sic]

I have a Motorscan Memobike 6050 ( my second device since last month because I destroyed my first one, my own stupid fault ) , it is an expensive device and not what you are looking for .... but I also have
a 4 / 6pin adaptor to OBD plug and you can use most of the car scanners to clear codes, I have a Foxwell car scanner and that one clear the codes ( also use it on my Energica but that one have a regular car
OBD plug so no adaptor needed )

Power vision tuner can show codes and erase them.

You can get codes by goign through dash. What is needed or even needed for ABS? I have heard some say just clear the code afterard, if one after a flush. Curious what people who have them, use them for.

Correct, but a FP3 and FP4 can also do this if we are talking about tuners with this option

ABS flushing have nothing to do with codes, it is cycling the pump to get all the "old" fluid out. I do this with the 6050 but you can flush a ABS system just like a regular one. It is a bit more time consuming if you
want all the "old" fluid out. You need to do the flush several times, procedure is as follow... never ever put on the contact wen doing this... start flushing the old fluid like you use to on the non ABS system.
Then close the nipples and turn on the contact so that the pump can cycles, I would say drive around the blok and repeat the flushing part. Do this several times and most of the "old" fluid will be out of the system
and ABS pump.

I would not pay money if all you want to do is read codes. Procedure is same on my 2001, tried it on 2020, to read through the dash. Then google list of linternet of what they mean.

If you are buying a tuner, then maybe something you may want as an option,

So why should someone buy one for at home?

I think a break out box would be cool at times. I won't think of buying or building one, until I need it, and then there won't be time.
