Default Throttle cable issues!

I have a 1996 Electra Glide Standard. My throttle cable broke. I ordered what dennis kirk said was stock and it was 37 7/8" long (housing length). I put it on and it was extremely tight but would not pull the throttle no matter how it was adjusted. The one I took off was 48" in length. Idle cable is 48" as well. I cannot find any info on what exactly I need and the dealership was no help at all. It has stock bars with an S&S Super E carb. The bike was my fathers and he just recently passed. Is there something im missing here? I ordered 48" throttle and idle cables now because thats what is on there but if 37 7/8" wouldnt pull the throttle why would a 48" Im so confused. Thanks for any and all suggestions and help. Im new here. Be gentle..lol

If you order what was on there before, you really can't go wrong because you know they worked. I can't why the shorter cables didn't work; just be patient when you install the new ones, and they should be fine.

Tks, I most def. will be patient with them. I wonder why its so hard to find info on it. Im guessing free cable length may be an issue? Meaning the amount of cable past the housing? Ive never seen anything like it, the physics don't add up

Not sure if this contradicts what you have already learned or if it supports it, but these are the part #'s for carb-equipped RK in '96:

Hopefully you have a factory service manual and are installing them in accordance with the manual. Alternatively you can go look to see if there are any YouTube videos that show the installation.

Make sure to take pictures of the routing and hook-up before disassembling them

Kinda weird. As long as the cable protusion out of the sheath is the same and the sheath goes from A to B it should work.

^^^THIS^^^
The throttle can only rotate so far, thus the maximum actuation length of the cable is fixed regardless of cable length.
The only variable is the distance between the mounting point of the housing/sleeve and the mechanism (arm/float/etc.) that it is engaging.

When you get your cables sorted out, and when you go to adjust them, make sure you adjust the main throttle cable ( front cable no spring ) first so that it pulls the butterfly all the way open. There is a small tang on the butterfly cam that has to come in contact with the corresponding tang on the carb body. The cable with the spring on it is for the back side of the cam and controls idle, so when you are all done you might have to adjust the idle to get it to 1000 rpm or so. You sometimes have to push on the sheath on the back cable ( with spring ) to get it to seat inside the opening. It tends to want to hang up as it sits at an angle. So you have to help it get started right.

It is a little tricky getting the cables adjusted, but take your time and back off the adjusters at the throttle grip as far as they will go, to give you enough slack. Then do the above procedure. If you don't do it as above, you won't get the butterfly in the carb to fully open.

Ok so I got the 48" in and installed the throttle cable. No matter what I do I cannot get the idle cable thats on there to stay tight. Looks like it is too loose but the throttle cable and all seem to work fine. My problem now is the bend is 90 degree in the elbow and should be 45 due to the hole in the fairing that it is fed through. It is now at a weird angle from the elbow to the fairing and cant be good long term. I cannot for the life of me find the exact cables that were on it! So frustrating. I have searched everywhere. I looked the ones 07ultraguy advised and they have 90 degree elbows as well. I even looked on S&S website as well! They have a 48" throttle but has 90 degree bend!
