Default This should be easy question

Hi guys
I try to understand reason for this spring on the windshield. I got 2022 RKS. I bought this shield from older RK and thought this spring should touch the back of rubber grommet to prevent it from flying off.

If this spring is indeed for safety how should it reach behind center of grommet since it is on the side of the frame which is properly align with center of the grommet when installed?

I believe new RKS shields dont even have this spring.

1. Do I really need this spring?
2. If yes how this should be positioned after installation
3. if it should touch back part of the grommet how to make it happen since spring is on the side of the frame?

seems like ridiculous question i know 🤪

I always thought it was to put my finger in and pull backwards if I was sitting on the bike. It was removed a long time ago....

I've never understood what it's there for either.
I leave mine on simply because I assume it's there for a reason but not really sure why.

It's supposed to clip to the rubber grommet as you put the windshield on. I tried but couldn't do 3 things at once so now they're laying in one of the drawers of my tool box. I took them off because they would vibrate and make enough noise that I could hear it while riding and of course they didn't vibrate at the same rpm/speed...one would stop and then the other one would start...off they came

I have a 2011 Road King with the same latch. It is very flexible and centering it in the grommet is very simple. It is an added level of safety holding the windshield in place.

IMHO.

H-D designed that latch as a spring so that it would "give way" should you hit something and try to go through the windshield. But, it does help keep the windshield in place if say, a strong wind were to blow from the rear of the bike while it is stationary. I've seen several where the spring latch was actually installed improperly and didn't hook over the grommet or the post it is attached to. If I recall properly, one windshield I ordered had them installed upside down.

It looks to me as though the spring is on the wrong side of the frame, if it was on the inside it would wrap over the post holding the docking spool. Just a wild *** guess...

That's where mine are, in a drawer, for the same reasons.........
