Default screwed up chrome help

I washed my 2015 street glide tonight and started it up when i was drying it. the microfiber towel i was drying the bike with touched the front exhaust heat shield and left the color of the rag on the heat shield because it was so hot. I tried to get it off with paint thinner but it wouldnt touch it. So i scrubbed it with steel wool and got most of it off but it made the chrome hazy. About makes me sick to think about it. Is there any way to bring the chrome back now?

No, you cannot polish scratches out of chrome. Regardless of the suggestions on what you can try, chrome is a hard finish so scratches are permanent.

a little WD-40 on the 0000 steel wool and light pressure would have been the ticket!!

I've done the steel wool. I like flitz. Lots of polishes out there. But also at some point you need to get over it too.

I’ve had similar experience - microfiber towel left a residue on a hot heat shield; let it cool down then detailing clay, water and elbow grease took it right off. If it bothers you that much you can always replace that heat shield, consider it a payment for lesson learned.

its happened to plenty of riders and its a lot of elbow grease to get it off without damaging the finish. If you have scratched the chrome, literally sanded the finish off, easiest thing is to replace that heat shield.

Your dealer probably has 50 of the heat shields from exhaust takeoffs in storage, they would probably give you one for nothing.

Take a look to see if a 2015 heat shield from a Road King would fit. If it does, I think I have one. If I do, its all yours..

yes, or I start with a wadded ball of aluminum foil and water...softer than chromium, just be gentle, and if what you're trying to take off isn't etched into the chrome, it'll take it off.....slide it gently over the surface and unfold and recrumple the aluminum and rewet frequently

i picked up some 0000 steel wool and wd 40 as a next step, but i've never had to use it
