CB on a SG
Thanks All
If ya don't mind the Handlebar Clutter - J&M is the way to go - Saves ya MUCHO $$$$
The $269 mentioned above is just the start; to be followed by J&M headsets/microphone and patch chords. And you won't have speaker muting with the J&M that you will have with the HD set-up.
I went through all of these issues and decided, because of the infrequent use of the CB, to simply get a good mounting bracket, handheld CB, and speakers/mic/PTT set-up for my '04. But that was just my personal assessment of what's available and what worked for me and my budget.
I was thinking ( yeah I know) that by using the J&M setup, you would also have to use a 3/4 helmet with headset installed, the music would be played through the HD speakers....hard to hear the radio with helmet and someone speaking through the headsets.......
The J&M setup is great on a FLSTC or something simular ( doesn't already have a radio), but having it all intergrated would be smoother and give a cleaner look to it all.....
I understand then that the dash would be simular to the Ultra dash???? Could one remove the sidedash plug and install it on the FLHX dash???? Just thinking outloud.....
That would be the best of both worlds, the FLHX dash and the side plug for the headsets....
I already have three J&M headsets and two correct lower cords for HD connection, so that expence is nill...( headsets & cords left from my 06 Ultra)
Also, would the CB antenna mount as the AM/FM radio antenna, only on the other side?
Trying to get my "chickens" all in a row before the purchase.....
HD would set me back $2,500 while the J&M was about $800.
I've heard the J&M quality is better, my question to those that have gone this route is
where did you get your power from ?
I know there is an 'ACC' switch on the dashboard panel and is wired to a plug under the seat. I thought this could be an option. I want it to turn off when the key is off.
any thoughts ?

The install is going to require the non-ultra overlay harness part number 70179-06.....but adding anything to the infotainment system on a non-ultra bike will need the harness anyway. I suggest ebay, the classifieds on this forum, or one of the few discount dealers like Surdyke, Zannoti's or Lakeshore, as the harness isn't cheap at $110 retail..
CB modules themselves are expensive to buy new, but luckily turn up frequently on ebay.....I found a like-new unit for about $60.
You'll also need the communications kit for a street glide. Part number for my bike was 77108-09. This kit comes with the passenger headset connector/volume control that bolts on to the rear 4 point docking hardware, so you can still remove the tour pak, etc. and it won't affect the Headset stuff. Problem is, that kit retails for $380, and even with a 20% discount is big bucks. I was able to find one on ebay for under $200 shipped....brand new, with everything included.....same guy is always selling them.
The rider headset connector in the street/road glide kit is supposed to be fastened to the tank at the left rear of the console using 3M adhesive tape and a supplied bracket, but I didn't like the look, so I modified my stock dash and installed mine there. It actually looks great....I'll have to take some pictures.
Last but not least is the antenna situation....this is another expensive thing....and all depends on how you use your bike. Regardless, you'll need the main CB cable that runs from the back of the module in the fairing to the mid frame under the seat. It is part number 76506-09 if I recall correctly. If you don't have a detachable tour pak, then you'll need part number 76410-09, which is the frame mount antenna kit, which will mount to the right saddlebag support just as your AM/FM antenna mounts to your left. If you DO have a removable tour pak then you'll need the adapter (part number 76219-00) and extension cable to run from the frame mount to the tour pak (part number 76294-09). This is assuming you already have an antenna mount on the right side of your tour pak and the short harness that attaches to it.
Of course, the easiest route is to just buy the J&M inside-the-fairing antenna, but I doubt reception will be as good.
Again, these part numbers are for an '09 bike....there are a couple of small items I left out, because my tour pak has the wrap around LED tail light on it which already included the CB antenna mast, but I can find the numbers for those parts if you need them.
The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
I had the JM setup, with wiring to get the radio signal into the headsets. The mics DO NOT CLOSE if you have a dual set-up for intercom. They are open all the time. The Harley setup closes the mic(s) when no one is talking. You have to either talk loud enough to activate the VOX or press the button for the intercom to work.
I was lucky and got the JM setup for next to nothing off a trade-in at my dealership. It had a single harness and I purchased the dual harness and the in-fairing antenna setup from JM. I was very pleased except that it stuck out on the bar.
I did eventually upgrade to the HD CB intercom set-up. With the new Boom setup you DO NOT need to change the dash panel. They have a small 90 degree port that clips onto the bottom of the tank dash. I don't have all of the part numbers but you can do everything yourself pretty easily if you can turn a wrench and plug and unplug connectors. The hardest part was removing the tank (which was almost full at the time). IF you have specific questions I will be more than happy to answer them.
I used the IMC Moto headsets (both in helmet and behind the ear). They are the manufactures of the HD branded headsets. They sounded good with both the JM and the HD setups.
Cruzn - If your dealer qouted you 2500.00 for the HD setup ....RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN!! I got my parts with a 10% off coupon and only spent about 800.00 for everything except the antenna. I used a JM In-fairing antenna as I wanted to keep the antenna's off the back. Installation only took me about an hour and a half. I will say though that I have plenty of experience disassembling the parts of my bike that had to come off as I had taken them off before. The ONLY problem I ran into was the wiring harness that goes over the radio. It becomes a tight fit when putting the fairing back on and it is not so much a problem but a puzzle that needs to be worked out.
-Also, I think that I got the power from the extra wire on the headlight. There should be a connector that is taped to the harness behind the headlight. It is on the same circuit and receives more power than the ciggy circuit.
