Ever since I got the bike neutral has be about impossible to hit, back and forth 1st to 2nd, I tried all sorts of things, foot position, revving the engine, shifting while rolling, adjusting the shift arm for different foot room, replaced shifter shaft and bushings "was sloppy", clutch adjustment, primary fluid level check, replaced the shifter arm with a high dollar Thrashn arm that is supposed to help with this problem, "waste of money did nothing", replaced stock arm between foot shifter and transmission, did notice bike not running or bike cold neutral not hard to hit, just when bike is hot, so thought maybe primary chain is too tight still has original auto chain adjuster, found primary chain too tight, replaced with a Hayden adjuster, it does shift into neutral better now when hot, but I did find if I pull in the clutch and hold the throttle up to about 1500 rpm then pull up it shifts into neutral from first like butter, so if anyone else is having the problem try it, it might work for you
The linkage needs to be loose. If it's too tight, it will overshoot. Correct, just hit it a tad and it will pull away into neutral. Play takes up either up or downshifting. Too-tight spherical bearings can actually make you miss second gear.
And it does take practice. The 5-speed was a lot easier to drop in. And always find it 1st up like the manual says. Practice with sneakers levering it up not running.. May have to jog with butt or bars to do that.
Clutch is adjusted correctly,no worn parts, new trans and clutch primary just before I bought the bike, I'm a master tech I know how to adjust a clutch, and not a newbie the HD been riding them 25 years, all the shifter linkages are free, but it my have something to do with the shake of the engine at idle, when Im giving it a little throttle the engine shakes much less, so I maybe looking at the engine mounts, basically all these 6 speeds finding neutral is not your friend, the only reason why I posted this is I know a lot of guys have a problem finding neutral on these bikes, so maybe giving a little throttle can maybe
help them to, peace out
Have you been inside the primary yet? If not and it still has the stock adjuster, chances are its ratcheted super high causing the primary chain to be super tight likely causing it to be hard to find neutral. The clunk you also hear going into first gear is from a worn or wearing out compensator in the front of primary. Separate, but often times they are both prevalent and can be fixed at the same time. HTH
I read what you wrote. If slightly higher RPMs helps you, Good deal. I've not run across one yet I couldn't get right. Again if it helped you, perhaps it could aid someone else.
Hayden primary chain adjuster/tensioner and a Man O War compensator and my neutral is like cutting into a warm stick of butter and no clunk at all going into first gear, no matter how warm or cold the bike is. Theres much better and more proven tech out there than OEM Harley.
