Default Heel toe

Ride an 84 Electra glide with EVO engine. Currently has only a toe shifter. Ordered and got one piece heel toe arm, but won’t clear engine case. Looking at parts diagrams, I see newer bikes have the shaft and arm to linkage as separate pieces, whereas mine the arm is welded to the shaft ( same on my sons 88).. looks like if I replace the shift rod and arm, mission accomplished. any other suggestions on adding the heel toe?

The older ones had a one piece shifter that incorporated the toe and heal shifter pegs

In five years of owning mine, I have never used the heel to shift. Actually....................I tried it once. It seemed very odd after riding motorcycles and toe shifting for over 45 years.

Just got my first touring bike, 23 RGS, it has heel shifter, can't convince myself to use it after 50 years of toe shifting.

My 1989 ElectraGlide had the two piece heel toe shifter. Pretty sure all the EVOs had the two piece and not the one piece. This allows adjustment of each for desired position?

I've have three ElectraGlides, all three had heel toe shifters. I like this setup with Harley floor boards.

On my 2019 FLHTP, I have banana boards with a toe shift and a stealth heal shifter. For me, that combination is great.

You have to try it more than once to get used to it.

You have to do it, not talk yourself out of it.

Just because you guys never got used to it doesn’t mean the OP shouldn’t get a heel shifter. It takes a few rides to get used to it but once you do, you won’t want to give it up. From your posts neither of you guys gave it a fair chance.

I have been riding since the 80's, When I got my latest Harley that was the very first thing I removed. Just couldn't get use to it. Fast forward to last year I decided to give a 2nd chance and have never looked back. It works great if you wear larger riding footwear.

The heel/toe debate will rage forever.... No right or wrong, just personal preference...

I personally like the heel/toe. I currently have a heel/toe shifter on all four of my bikes, to include a couple that don't usually have a heel/toe shifter... namely my '01 FXSTS Springer and my mid control '16 Low Rider..

I can just hear the anti-heel shifter crowd now.... "Oh the humanity...!!!"

To each their own. What I prefer is not what others want to hear. This is often the case with many, many questions raised on this forum!!!
