It's time to remove the heel shifter and get back a bit of real estate for my boot. Here's the question: Should I use the HD ****/cap to cover the shaft, or is it better to move the toe shifter outward (to the left) using an aftermarket spacer?

On my '17 RGS I found it better to have the shifter on the inboard spline position with the cap on the outboard spline. The position of the shifter was more comfortable for me. Test it both ways and see how you like it. You can use fuel line hose for a spacer if you go the outboard route.
Left the forward lever in the original position and added an inexpensive cap over the exposed splines.
In order to get the cap to stay secured, I had to add a spacer; without the spacer, the set screw would lock onto and possibly damage the splines, which I definitely didnt want to do.
I've liked mine out for the last few years. The inside spacer is a OEM part on the late model touring. The last one I bought a couple years ago was about $1.00 at Harley. Might be $5. now....
