Forget about wet, dry etc, just fill it to the correct level, with the bike vertical.

Note: GL-5 Gear Lube will not hurt a thing in any 5 or 6 speed transmission.

This level is correct for all big twins made since mid `84.

Though for fun, this is what you said about it last year. Notice the difference?

Fill it to this level, bike up straight.

This is the correct level for Big Twin primaries since mid `94.

A little lower won`t hurt, but don`t overfill.

I changed mine recently on a ’22 Glide. The service manual calls for 30oz, not a quart (32oz), and it filled right to the bottom of the clutch pressure plate, bike level on a stand.

That’s for a “wet fill”. If you’ve had the outer primary cover off, and are refilling then it’s a “dry fill” and takes 34 oz.

Seriously, you are digging up my old posts to nitpick me????

Service manuals have shown both pics over the past decades, just like you said.

Nope, the forum put your previous years statement right at the bottom of the thread.

I thought it was amusing that you worded it so absolutely and almost identically both times, but to a different measure each time.

Which was what this thread was about, the inconsistency as to how high to fill the primary with oil, and the tremendous clutch difference I found deliberately going a little low.

I drain oil with the bike vertical, on a hoist. For me the primary gets 1liter. That's 33oz, and a small bit. I have never had a problem. When cold, before hammering into 1st, I pull in the clutch and wait 5 to 10 seconds. Slides into 1st without any noise at all. Neutral is very easy to find, and always is when the clutch is properly adjusted.

I normally use Motul primary for the primary. Always worked for me.

That’s right. You can even pull the clutch in, blip the throttle and that breaks the clutch friction. Then it’ll go into 1st also without the clunk.

Meh, there’s nothing to go with. The manuals and web info are inconsistent. People are inconsistent too, including me. Sometimes it’s amusing.
