Default High Idle after awhile, Help!

Hello all! I am having an issue with my 2002 Road King Classic. Over the last little while, when I ride for awhile my idle goes up to about 2k RPMs. It throws a loss of idle speed control error. I have sprayed the hell out of the IAC and cleaned the throttle body as much as possible and it does bring the idle down to almost normal for a ride or two, but then starts to creep back up and then doesn't go back down. I've tried "reseting" the idle by flipping the run switch off, then on while waiting 10 seconds between a ton of times.

I am just wondering if I should replace the IAC, the TPS, or anything else that may be causing this. I have searched the forum for this issue and it usually comes back to cleaning the IAC, so I am just looking for something else to try because I would prefer to not have to take it in.

Thanks in advance!!

Do you have the MMI system injection or Delphi Injection? Have you checked the sub-forums for injection servicing or diagnostics?

Absolute WILD guess, engine temp sensor sending "cold" signal to the ECM after warm up resulting in cold idle air and fuel flow even after the engine is fully up to temperature?

I have the Delphi. Also, no, I have not. I will look for those. 👍

Check for air leaks anywhere in the system.

I believe the trouble shooting manual has a way to test the IAC. I think there is also a way to verify that it is in the correct position from ignition on to off.

The last thing to do is just buy parts based on codes.

A little more information about your bike might help.
Do you have a stock air cleaner?
Do you have stock exhaust or stock engine?
Are you using an aftermarket tuner?
How many miles are on your bike.
Ape hangers or beach bars?

OK I just threw that last one in for fun.

So, I have Aftermarket air cleaner and exhaust. It is tuned and the map was done by Fuel Moto. Stock engine, also. The bike has about 23,000 miles on it. Also, just stock handlebars right now. lol

If IAC is sticking, it's toast. If it really wasn't the problem, spraying as you described dissolves crude and it penatrants and carries it under seals.

So pretty much, the IAC and throttle sensor will fail shortly.

Clean only with clean cotton rag sprayed with it. Around butter fly which is 50% of idle air. Spray just a touch on IAC pintol point. Key on and off to observe pintol jumping in and out.

Spraying can also insulate the temperature sensor pretty good.

I would start at the connection on the tuner and throttle and return cable freeplay at throttle body. Does butterfly snap back good?

May have missed it but what does it do without tuner? Or is that possible now?

Interesting thing about my 04 EFI, if TPS sticks, it starts up with huge idle flair.

Also, if started in gear and you get that lug fwd till plates break free of oil sticking them, it loses idle control reference and won't idle down.

Somehow ECM looses track of were it references from. Someone on here said it's caused by the speed sensor on top of transmission.

Sorry about long winded rambling.

Be sure to check and make sure your down tube vent is open on transmission. There should not be any pressure on that plug seal.

Just splash. Primary vents thru clutch pushrod tunnel to transmission.

Muddobbers will plug that vent hose.

So, I had some time and took the bike out for a ride to let it warm up and put the stock tune back on it. It still gives me a high idle and error code with that tune, also. 😞

probably electrical.
even though the bike don't have that many miles those wires at those sensor connectors are thin and brittle and will break under the casing just from unplugging the sensor harnesses.
