As I pulled back into the drive, I let off the gas again and it died again. After stopping. I pressed the start button and the bike started right up. I had the battery checked and it checked out ok. A friend insisted it probably had a dead cell. I bought a new battery, we took a two hour ride and the speedo jumped around around again. We were minutes from home so when I pulled into the drive again I let off the gas and it died again. Once again I started the bike and it fired right up again. The mechanic is backed up for four weeks and I thought someone could give me an idea on what the problem may be??

Sounds electrical. Check for codes for low voltage.? Could be an ignition switch. What is the overall condition of wireing?

Sometimes bikes left outside get corrosion inside wire crimps. Usually voltages checks on the wire and on the terminal to ground will show voltage difference.

Grounds can be checked same way with the ohm meter.

Welcome David.

Always a good idea top check your 12V power any time there is an electrical glitch...

But, as mentioned already, those are classic symptoms of failing VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor).... ie: the erratic speedo and/or turn signals not self-cancelling plus stalling when coming to a stop..... otherwise starting and running fine.

It is mounted on top of the transmission, easy to get to. Pull it out of the trans and see if it is covered by metal shavings. That will affect it's performance. If it is dirty, cleaning it could fix it...

Barring any other diagnostic codes, this is one of the rare cases that with symptoms like yours, I wouldn't hesitate to install a new VSS on the bike. The VSS doesn't always set a code, and if it is just starting to go bad, it could be an intermittent failure and test OK...

Here it is on your bike. It's #31 under "Transmission Housing & Oil Tank"
