Default Belt tension adjustment question

2022 Road King Special with 13” shocks

How do you prevent cam plate on the right side of the axle from rotating (right) when you torque the axle nut? Any tips or tricks on this???

Also I know left side cam plate is attached to axle itself but I believe right side cam plate is just sitting freely on right side of the axle. What guarantee do I have that left and right cam plate rotate exactly the same angle at the same time when I am torquing the axle?

Somehow seems like cam plate on the right side is always slightly off. Is there any indentation on right side of the axle to assure cam plate on right side turns exactly like one on the left?

What a pain with this simple adjustment 🤦

I also installed longer shocks 13” (comparing to 12”stock) and I am not sure which belt deflection specs to follow for standard RK or RKS as they are slightly different. I assume since I have longer shock like RK I would follow these specs? I guess common sense will be to do that but I am not sure 100%

i also did adjustments on jiffy stand unloaded while I realize manual suggest wheel of the ground but seems like they change this recommendation back and forth so I think it shoudnt be a big deal.

Seems like as of now I am at 12mm deflection and RK alllows up to 14mm slack in the belt so I tried to stay at the middle ground between RK and RKS specs.

Please share your opinion and especially this trick from first question as it was ridiculous to coordinate this alignment on both sides for some reason as I have to gently tap cam plate with hammer on right side to properly align plates on both sides to be fairly even.

Freaking MoCo doesnt even have marks on these plates which is ridiculous considering how even minor movement can affect the adjustment- what a joke. I marked it with marker for now and nail polish to put dot on my swing arm as some reference

Picture for reference

Is there not a flat spot on the right side of the axle where the flat spot on the cam slides on and matches up so as to not let it rotate (coincidentally matching the orientation of the fixed left cam)?

I should check this before seems like you are correct. Looking at replacement parts seems like yes cam plate have flat spot so I assume axle has matching surface which would explain how both sides will move same way on both sides. I guess maybe my mind was playing tricks on me when I measured this.

Still a good idea to mark the spot before removing. Good reference when torqued back on. ??

Likewise, some folks find the third hand tool from JIM’s useful when torquing.

I have used the third hand locking tool for years to lock the axle while torquing. You can buy a much more affordable version on ebay etc rather than the Jims Machine. They are both the same and the cheaper ones work great. Just remember to tale it off when done.

Did you apply a light coat of anti-seize to the inboard side of the cone nut on the rear axle?
