2013 ultra classic. At idle the volt meter hangs around 12.As i begin to go through the gears the meter goes up to 15 volts or so. and stays there at around 55-60 miles an hour. When i get home it idles at around 12 volts .Is this normal?
Peace and Prayers
instrument voltmeter accuracy is questionable. measure right at battery terminals with decent DMM then at voltmeter. let us know results.
what's the idle rpm?
Had a similar condition while on the road a couple of years ago.
While cruising around at low rpms I got a check engine light and my battery voltage was reading low. (I don’t recall how low)
The day after this started I rode around locally at low rpms and came to the conclusion that the issue was only present at low rpms.
The very next day I hit the Highway for the 600 mile ride home which was about 90% highway speeds so around 3500 rpms and had no issues.
When I got home I checked everything to include the battery, voltage regulator and stator which everything was reading normal other than low voltage at low rpm.
Two weeks later I noticed my voltage was reading low even at high RPMs but I was able to get the bike home.
I took the Bike to the shop and they found the stator was smoked.
A bike should jump up around 14.4 at higher RPMs. 15 may just be round off error. I just start mine, and at idle it did jump to 14. As said put a decent digital meter on it. Should be about 12.7 with bike off, for awhile, rev it up, and should go around 14.4
Not the worse thing to look at. It could mean charging issues. Though I doubt it. Mine says 12 volts key on and then jumps up. On high idle cause cold. But I don't think 200 rpms makes a difference.
It would be nice to have accurate digital volt meter, but I have been to lazy to install one. You can tell alot with one.
