300 F is not on the danger side for an air cooled harley Motor. 300 F oil temperature is another sotry.

Is your head temperature being measured at the Spark Plug, with a thermocouple, or by IR (non contact) sensor?

Values will be different.

Good Luck

Sheldong, I checked my head temp logs after returning from Sturgis. My bike got really hot a couple times out there when I was silly enough to try to drive down the main drag and got stuck in the traffic jam from hell. I had hit head temps of 330, 340 and....370!! OUCH! No apparent ill effects, bike was still running great even when that hot. I did change the oil when I got home though!

NCCOP,

i'm using a Tmax digital speedo that gives me access to the engine temp sensor. I figured it is a tc in front cycle, but havn't found it in service manual, except for schematics. is the same temp sensor that stock ecm controllor uses. I'm ready to try something different. BTW, bike runs strong, real strong it pulls. it is just the head temp got me scared.

Default RE: engine running hot- need help- update

i just wanted to update those folks that read this tread.

i got one of those led temp readout dip sticks and have been watching my oil temp and engine temp since retarding my timing by 2'.

engine temp readout of 250-260, seems to go stable around 260 in traffic now as long as we are +20mph and when crusing i'm getting about 220-240'F +65mph. much improved.

oil temp readout to engine temp reading looks like a 30'F different when engine is running and about 10'F diff when engine is stopped

well oil temp has never gone over 230'F that i caught on readout , i've been driving in traffic on monday and tues and would have seen engine temp of 270-290'F. no prev oil temp data.

i also changed out my plugs after changing timing, so i'll probably stick those plugs back in.

anyway, thanks to everyone who helped.
