Default Amazon paint sets

Ok, hear me out…..

I have a few Amazon parts on my bike. Passenger pegs, a seldom used tour pack, lowers, etc. The quality is all just OK compared to OEM but the value is outstanding. Like my lowers, I had OEM Harley lowers till I hit a piece of flying rethread that smashed my lowers. I got the Amazon ones and the fit was great, paint was good and the only thing I found lacking was the glovebox which I simply replaced with my original. The price of my Harley lowers if I remember was 800 bucks. The Amazon ones were 120.

Now my 2015 road glide is looking warn compared to my buddies newer bikes and I want new paint now. I got a quote for around 2500 for a full single color paint job. But looking on Amazon I see I can get all new parts for around 1000 bucks. I’m wondering if I should risk it ?

Has anyone done a tin swap using Amazon parts?

Can't say about the paint quality but many many years of dealing with the aftermarket and repop harley parts nobody does sheet metal for fit and finish like the factory. Something is always off enough you know.

Good luck.

I would go with a bit better than what Jeff Bezos can do. Plus knowing the paint sprayed on all of the tins came from the same can is more reassuring.

This is 100% true. I'd rather have worn Harley paint than an aftermarket hack job but that doesn't mean there aren't good painters out there. You get what you pay for.

My friend builds show bikes. They don't see the miles, just the crowds. For those bikes, he buys the Amazon crap and sprays it himself. For the bikes he rides, he uses factory parts. The knock off stuff never fits and requires a lot of work to get right. I would risk it, but it's your money.

I think of it like this: If your budget is $2500 and you waste $1k on parts you can't use or don't like, you're worse off than you are now. If that's a risk you're willing to take, best of luck.

If you don't need a color change it's amazing what can be done with old paint. The FXRT I bought this spring was a tired old war pony and I was able to bring back the OEM paint to a very acceptable level.

I haven't used those paint sets. I have, however, used Advanblack saddlebags and tour pak. And they were a huge pain in the ***. It's not only the paint quality you have to think about, but also the fitment (none of the molds are exactly the same as stock) AND compatibility with stock hardware. It's very likely you'll take all the hardware off and at least some of it won't fit the new stuff. Then what do you do? Adapt things until you either get to a satisfactory result or scrap the whole project and go a different direction.

I eventually threw the Advanblack stuff in a dumpster and went OEM.

Nobody does finishes like the HD factory. They even provided consultation to Mercedes AMG division. Top quality independent painters come close. I wouldn’t go with Bezos’ Chinese parts. But, it’s your bike…you decide.

oh yeah…I’ve never heard of factory finishes looking bad over time except from damage. So, maybe that is a tell.
