Since getting my 2017 Ultra Limited a couple of weeks ago, I've been worried about this cold start rattle sound. It only seemed to be audible from idle to about 2300 rpms. Once the bike warms up, it goes away completely. I'm no mechanic so I naturally assumed the worst. Best case scenario, a worn lifter. Worst case scenario, who knows. Anyway, turns out it was something really simple. I started up the bike last night, heard the noise, then put my foot just behind the left slip-on and pushed down a little. The noise completely disappeared. Just a loose fit on the exhaust cross over tube. As it heats up, the metal expands and the noise goes away.
Figured I'd post this here in case anyone else is dealing with a similar "engine" noise. Check the exhaust as described above. Hopefully its just something simple for you too.
