Default 2016 primary change

I was told to put 38oz into the primary on my street glide....i put 38oz of 80w-140 syn3(of which the dealership says is the new better oil, smh) and about 2 oz came out..should I redrain it and start over? Should it take less since it's thicker? Idk, just want a safe bike... Or just make sure it doesn't go over the pressure plate? Heelllpp 🙄

Welcome to the forum. Please explain, did you put 38oz in and then when you went to change it again, only 2oz came out of the drain plug, or did you put 38oz in and 2oz overflowed?

Hopefully you didn't put an 80w oil in the primary. Your next thread will be " I just changed my oil and now i can't find neutral ". If you're using HD brand then put their formula + in the primary.

A lot of us use the HD 80w140 gear oil in the primary. It works fantastic.

Thickness doesn't affect volume.... 38oz of 20W oil is the same amount as 38oz of 60W oil....

If 2 oz. came out when it was filled with the bike upright, you have it way overfilled......

Hold the bike upright, or put it in a wheel chock, do not check/fill it on the jiffy stand.

Regardless of primary size (standard v Narrow or Touring v Softail), or oil weight, the above diagram from dawg shows how much to fill it...

Just to put the oil weights used between engine oils and gear oils in perspective, and to see how they compare ... look at the chart below...

It shows the HD Formula 1, which is an SAE50 GL-1 conventional oil, compares closely to the HD heavy synthetic SAE80w-140 gear oil... The comparison holds true to other makes of comparably weighted conventional oils to gear oils...

See you got your answer and only as a suggestion, primary is better off with non detergent gear oil since there is no filter. Harley's Formula+ works best year round.

And Welcome, hope you enjoy your ride here. And again as a suggestion, make your next new post over in the new member welcome area to say hello.

Please step away from your motorcycle; let someone who can read the service manual or use advice given above in the diagram work on your motorcycle.
