They are in South Miami Beach Florida, and cannot find a locksmith who works on bikes. 2014 Harley Ultra Limited. Need to unlock ignition switch and forks. a local Harley dealer was not any help.
As a last resort, can the switch be broken and turned with a large wrench? What damage will that cause?
They are traveling and have limited tools.
*** UPDATE *** - They are sure another key is in one of the saddle bags, or the trunk. Can the trunk or saddle bag locks be defeated easier than the ignition lock?
.
#1) I very rarely use the fork lock. I carry a disc brake lock. I periodically lube and test my fork lock at home to ensure that it works properly.
#2) Traveling out of town, I keep a spare key in my luggage, or on my person (jacket or helmet). I carry my key and key fob on a key ring, clipped to my belt loop. If I lose that, I know I have a spare somewhere. I always leave a spare key and key fob at home, for worst case scenario.
#3) Lost key fob. I keep my key and key fob on the same key ring, clipped to my belt loop. I keep my key fob code somewhere in case I lose my fob. With the code, you can override your lost fob.
Try any HD key in that housing. There are only so many combinations Harley can come up with. I had a barrel key from an 09 Street Glide fit a 2016 Ultra Limited.
Hundreds of thousands of possibilities....... 7 pins with 7 different depths (counted my own) is 823453 possible. And if anyone has ever tried drilling one of these, it's not that easy. It's hardened material.
They lost one key...the spare is locked in the saddlebag...and....
??? Love to know the back story on that. Hope it works out. Let us know.
Two people traveling. The each had spare keys placed in the other bike. The one fellow couldn't find original key. Used back up key and locked the bike in parking lot for the evening. Then managed to loose the backup key. This is after riding 1100ish miles that day to complete a Saddle Sore 1000. So now they are "stuck" in South Miami Beach drinking $18 drinks on the beach watching the "scenery" go by. They are planning on only 300 miles days returning to NC.
I am surprised at how many folks state that they never lock their ignition locks on their bikes. Perhaps it's a new thing for the newer bikes with proximity FOB?
