Default 2006 Electra glide fuel guage

Hi everyone and merry Christmas, i have been looking into my fuel guage not reading correctly and i think it’s possibly the guage. My question is has anyone owned a pre Rushmore Harley and notice how long it takes the fuel guage to return to empty? Mine takes a long time to return to zero. As soon as i turn the key on it wil go to full and stay there. I’ve tried to ground the yellow and white wire from harness at fuel pump under console with it disconnected and it doesn’t move at all from empty because it’s disconnected. This is a picture of my guage about 5 minutes after turning off.

Any help appreciated. Thanks

Just to understand what you are saying, say you fill up and ride an hour, does it drop then with key on and bike running?

I wouldn't be concerned once you key off what it does.

Now I sure want it dropping as I run. And although I never used my gage and always started looking for or planning my fuel stops at 150 miles , I have seen mine near empty and the fuel light lit going home from work at night.

Filling it showed me it was about a half gallon left. However I would not have noticed the light in the day. Nor the fuel gage on mine.

It's nice yours is at least visible in front of you. Not like on mine on the tank.

I’m not really concerned that it takes a while to return to empty but with my fuel guage reading full all the time I’m curious if that’s related or not. I haven’t noticed it to ever come off full but i just bought it and haven’t really rode it that much yet. I drained the tank when i removed it to do inner cam bearings, etc and it always reads full when i turn the key on. I removed the pump assembly and hand worked the float and it never changes. I either have a guage or sender problem and i guess I’ll have to dig into the wiring more

That's different. But just guessing that it's the mechanical end. The sending unit in the tank. It's just a float moving a variable resistor.

However, a bad ground wire of the fuel gage will make it read full.

On the sensor in tank, a full tank will read 27-40 ohms. If tank is half, it reads 240-264 ohms.

If it reads way high or infinity. It's not grounded or open.

Before checking resistance, of course unhook negative side of battery.

Check your grounds. They should look as good as your meter reads with you touch the meter probes together.
