Hello all, I have a 2007 RoadKing Custom that recently started having a startup issue.
no major changes done to the bike since this started happening.
Occasionally when attempting to start the bike, i turn the ignition to run all lights come on as normal, when I flip the ignition switch I can hear the fuel pump priming, however when attempting to start I get nothing. Sometimes it will click as if attempting to start, other times dead silence. An important note is when this occurs I also cannot use the turn signals nor the brake lights.
If I cycle the bike on and off it will randomly work properly again.
I have verified the battery is working properly(tested it) and charged it to make sure, all fuses are OK, double checked battery connections.
Wondering if anyone has faced the same issue?
Skip the cycling of the key switch, just release and reapply the start button a few times.
If it suddenly cranks over and starts, thats classic dirty contacts and plunger in the starter motor.
Otherwise I agree with the battery replacement. These engines take an absurd amount of current to crank over, and many a technically good battery doesnt provide the needed amperage.
My ignition swith was getting intermittent on my FLHR. Is the dash lit up when this happens? If the dash goes out it could be the switch. You said you could not use blinkers, so if all electrical is gone, than it might be that switch.
Clicking is usually sign of weak battery or loose battery connections.
The think to do is stop when this happens, and don't touch anything. Then touch one thing at a time. If flipping the igniton swithc back and forth helps, it bay have bad contacts. You can order from harley to match your key, or get a drag. Drag was $100 cheaper and on the shelf.
I would have said starter circuit, but you said blinkers not working Does sound little like a bad battery. Put a charger on it, and see if starts normal or jump pack. Putting a meter on the battery would help. Perfect is about 12.7. But I have seen plent start at 12.3.

When it doesn't work, the dash lights up(except it doesn't show the mileage until I flip the kill switch on) head lights come on and turn signals come on as DRLs however when i try to use the turn signals by clicking the left or right they do not flash. When I cycle the ignition switch it will randomly restore them and bike starts perfectly fine.
Under normal operation didn't think you needed kill switch on to have odometer come on. I can doubt heck on my 07.
You can find old electric manuals on eBay $50 shipped that look unused.
Kill switch blocks starting, I can't remember if blocks fuel pump. Ignition switch should power up all lights and dash. If something doesn't come on start checking back.
Unless low voltage causing this. Again I would put on charger or jump pack and see if it behaves

Yeah, i figured the odometer issue was related.
I'll probably check a new battery and see. Currently is only a year old but I suppose it's not implausible for it to be the issue.
It is sounding to me like the ignition switch. By cycling it your likely partially cleaning a contact. But, you could also be getting a defective but not dead relay to close properly. Might just check to make sure relays and fuses are clean.
