I would have removed the battery to charge it too. Using a tender, if it worked, would take a while. A good charger can recover a dead battery in a couple hours.

The bike was outside so maybe he had no place to get power.
Typically better to slow charge small batteries. How much it matters I don't know . The battery after a week was probably low not dead. But I don't know
.might be low voltage code and he needs enough starts or miles for it to clear.
Hold trip button in and turn bike on to pull codes. If I am remembering wrong, just Google it.

Maybe its a bad battery needs to be checked. The OP lived in NC don't get that cold there.
Perhaps, but I would do what he did because taking it to the dealer is a time suck. It's not hard to pull the battery and charge it, unfortunately he didn't follow the proper procedure and now has a CEL. My money says to clear the code and all is good again.
