Hey All, this is a takeoff from a previous post, after reading I decided to put muffler packing on my Rinehart DBX45 in hopes of quieting them down some.
I purchased SS Tie wraps to hold the packing in place.
My question is, does muffler packing breakdown over the years and eventually will be gone?
I don't want to end up with a bunch of SS Tie wraps vibrating around in the mufflers IF this is the case.
Definitely overthinking. The wrap is fiberglass and doesn't break down. It will build up with oil over the years, but will likely outlive the bike, or the muffle to which it is attached.
Um, I've blown out fiberglass wrapping more than once. The glass fibers seem to break up and get blown out the tailpipe with time. I'm not unique in that. Many a glass pack muffler maker describes it and sells repacking kits because of this.
Its been my experience that muffler wrap lasts about 10k miles. Some of it will still be there, usually on each end of the baffle, but most will be gone.
I use a minimal amount of tie wire to secure the packing around the baffle.

Wow, that's it? I don't feel like doing this every year.......
The Rush Big Louies I have are wrapped in that fiberglass matting and you can get the replacement matting separately. Pretty sure the matting on mine are gone since I've only replaced them once a while back. The sound of the muffs seems to mellow out a bit w/o the wrapping and I kinda like them that way.
I agree with you RKZen. I'm sure the packing in DBX45's is at least partially gone. They have a bit more bark now than when I first put them on, but I actually like them better now than when they were new. I suppose if I develop the rattles others have reported, I may repack, otherwise I'll leave them alone.

Man, now I'm really confused. The previous thread I read, I thought the packing would quiet down the mufflers
and now you are saying the opposite.....
