The Sert is just a interface to acess the ecm, your older version may work, long as youre letting dealer do a dyno tune. All serts so far have worked in later models only thing is your cd will not have any maps for you to use so dyno tune will be needed. I saw the part no. for the 08 sert and like every year before only the letter at the end of the part no. has changed, Q I think is the new one. A new ecm would not really have to have a new sert being it only allows access to be able to tune fuel and timing tables. Time will tell but I say its better than 50-50 it will be able to be used.
The '08 models use a DBW throttle control. There are no throttle cables from the right hand twist grip to the throttle butterfly. The upgrade modules for the previous years don't know anything about the DBW system on the '08's and that's why they won't work. Anyone wanting to upgrade the '08 ECU's will just have to wait for the industry to catch up.
Good luck,
Steve R.
The "SERT" is just an interface between the PC and ECM, it doesn't necessarily have to know anything about the ECM except how to read the ECM's id and write the fact that it has been programmed by a race tuner. Don't assume that the present SERT won't work with the new ECM. The new software that comes with the new SERT is the important factor and traditionally that has been available separately. It MAY be different for the '08s but it might be a waste of money to sell an unused SERT until we know that for sure.
Granted! My apologies if I spoke too soon although a couple of others had already stated that it definitely would not work so I didn't feel too out of line by posting what I did. All I was trying to point out was that Harley made what I consider to be a "very" big change in the bikes ECU. Going to a drive-by-wire throttle system is no small change, IMO, and I can't even begin to imagine what other changes were made in order to accomplish that. As you say, the SERT sold for the previous model years "might" work on the '08 models and we shouldn't automatically assume that it won't but given the significant changes made to the '08 models ECU I wouldn't automatically assume that it would either. I have no doubt that all of this will be worked out and confirmed shortly anyway.
Well I am not about to dump my '07 SERT just yet - very likely the only difference with the '08 version is the software on CD. The SERT interfaces to the PC using a standard DB9 serial cable... and the other end interfaces to the ECU by plugging into a deutsch connector... data to the ECU is sent over aserial data lead at this end too. So the SERT is nothing but a dongle that interfaces 12V EIA signals to the ECU's serial data input. It doesnt plug directly into the ECU'sconnector so it shouldn't matter what kind of ECU isbeing used - as long as the data leaduses the samedc voltage level.
The fella I got my info from works for a dealer but.... Harley "buys" him from the dealer to come to Milwaukee to work onspecial projectsdealing withsert problems/reconfigs/mapping issues/new product introductions, etc., etc.................. He's headed to Milwaukee Monday to do some testing on the '08 SERT mapping variations. I trust this guy totally... he got the hp/tq #'s on my bike without head work... most people with my config that have heads have 2-3 hp more than me... pretty good I'd say.... I realize there are naysayers to what I've presented....... but I hope everyone realizes that the MoCo is Greedy enough to change this up just enough to make us have to keep upgrading to the new stuffON PURPOSE!!!!!!! Good Luck Boys !!!!
Well Billy... we will leave it up to you to ask your tech about it when he gets back. That is unless the unlikely event happens and someone gets their hands on one before that.
No problem... will do...... hell my bike is not going to be here until early Oct. anyway, my ship date is 9-28-07, 3-4 days to get here, and 4-5 days to upgrade it...... meanwhile I'll continue to ride "BLACK BETTY" !!!!
