Hello All,
I have an 06 RoadKing which I purchased from original owner. He put aftermarket slip ons and claims he had the bike tuned by Harley afterwards. Shortly after purchasing it I notice a deceleration pop from the exhaust. This bike only had 21,000 miles on it, so he didnt ride it much in the 16 years he owned it.
I just had the fuel injectors replaced with Harley recommended injectors in 06 bulletin and Harley installed Stage One update afterwords. The deceleration pop is a little more profound.
I had a ex-Harley mechanic tell me there is a crack in my rear header pipe near the Y. Yes, this has original header pipes except the slip ons. However, after an in depth look and removing all hear shields, I cannot see a crack.
So, if you were in my spot, would you replace the header pipes in hopes that cures the deceleration pop, or have Harley do another tune? Also, after the header pipes are replaced, do I need to have the bike tuned again???
Thank you for the suggestion. New headers between $300 and $700 what I am seeing, steelership wants $900 for tune. No, I do not want another mortgage payment for a new bike.
First check your headers with some spray soap if it bubbles. then you got a leak. First put a wench on it a make tighter and try the soap stuff again. As far as decal popping that happens maybe to much fuel. Maybe a tune.
Unless it's on the exhaust side don't use soapy water, you won't see bubbles, it'll get sucked into the heads on the down stroke.
Use WD40 and listen for a change in the sound of the engine.
The dealer is the absolute last place I would go. High priced and low skilled, using Harley tuners which are limited by the EPA. I would check around and find a good Indy who knows what he's doing to tune your bike.
If no leaks are found, then it can be addressed in the tune.
Did the the mechanic friend actually inspect the pipe and find a leak, or was he was just guessing based on experience. That "Y" pipe is notorious for cracking.... that design was questionable as it seems there was a lot of stress at those joints in the "Y"..
Look closely as they can be hard to detect... look specifically at where pipe sections join/meet.......
