I've never updated the Nav Maps set in my 2019 BoomGTS because Apple/Google/CarPlay maps are far superior, and work well for me. But I decided to give it another try and paid for the updated maps for those times when I have no cell service to use Apple/Google maps.
The weather is shitty here, so I've spent time getting aquatinted with the HD Ride Planner. It's probably OK for nerds, but it doesn't blow my skirt up at all. I'll keep playing with it though. Maybe I'll learn to like it.
What came as a big surprise is that the invoice for the map update is from a company in Budapest Hungary. This could explain why the HD Nav sucks so bad, and it's probably the same company that makes some of the HD t-shirts.
The alternative would be to pay your dealer to update it for you. Now IF they wanted to charge you for "labor" too then I'd go your route and do it myself. I checked with my dealer and was told I would only pay for the update and not the "labor". (they always do my work so maybe they consider me a "good customer" and are giving me a "deal")
I use both HD Maps and Apple Maps with CarPlay. I have used HD Ride Planner for a number of years, and it does the job for me. I especially like the fact that I can plan a route in Ride Planner and then send it wirelessly to my bike. It's not perfect, but it is functional, and I've traveled around the country using it.
i've never paid to have the nav maps updated in my vehicles (i've also never updated the maps). i just don't figure that there will have been that many changes occurring that would actually affect me. and because i am a cheap bastard™, i'd rather use that $150 for other things. doesn't mean i won't be following your progress though.
On my 2018, I could go into the menu to access the map database. This isn't my pic, but mine showed the same version the day I bought it home from the dealer on 9/28/2017. The paperwork showed a build date of 9/14/2017. Basically, the maps were a little over a year old when the bike left the factory.
