Default Baker compensator install

I'm about to install a Baker comp in my 2015 FLHR. Shimming the original comp bought me some time but it's time for a full upgrade. In the instructions, it says to check sprocket alignment by laying a straight edge across the outer surface of the inner primary and taking a depth measurement using the back of a vernier caliper for both sprockets. The 2 readings should be within 0.030". Is there any reason not to use the more traditional method of laying a straight edge directly across both sprockets and checking alignment with feeler gauges? The 1st method requires tightening the 2 long bolts that secure the outer primary using spacers to simulate the outer being installed. Any thoughts from someone who installed one of these?

Ask Baker. They may have a very good reason for their method. They may also approve of your method. But, if the 2 sprockets are not perfectly parallel and square, your method might result is additional error in the measurement.

How about this? Their compensator isn’t any more sensitive to alignment than the OEM one. Since there is no reasonable corrective action if the specs aren’t perfect, just install the Baker and be done with it. That’s whst I did on my ‘12 and it worked so much better than the OEM and the SE one.

There actually is a corrective action process as the kit comes with 3 spacers. However, 0.030" is a very generous spec and I'm sure I can get plenty close with the feeler gauge method. Glad to hear the Baker comp has worked well for you. Thanks.

Installed one on mine several years ago and used feeler gauges, works fine. There are lots of ways to check distance.
Make sure the new comp will work with your rotor, mine would not and had to by the Baker rotor as well.

Thanks for the info. I assume by your rotor comment that you installed yours on a 2007 - 2010 Big Twin, where the spring cup was an integrated part of the rotor?
