Proposed build on '08 Ultra:

SE Air Cleaner
SE Race Tuner
Vance and Hines True Dual Headers
Supertrapp Touring Pipes (basically, the old SE IIs before catalyst mufflers)
Based on my experience with my '07 and info I've picked up here and there...

SE A/C: As already mentioned, consider a K&N or Ness BS for the cleanable filter.

True Duals: Despite the controversy, true-duals (i.e. sans the crossover) will hurt performance somewhat. This has been proven through dyno testing from multiple sources, and if you don't believe it call Jamie at Fuel Moto, who does about 100 dyno tests per month. There have also been articles in American Iron magazine that reference this.

Cam: Have been watching the cam situation myself, but I don't see any dyno charts that are impressive enough for me to bite. I believe the cam makers will have to develop 96"-specific cams before I'll even consider. For me, I'm interested in low-end and midrange TQ, while peak HP is a secondary concern. Results from two dyno tests on 26H's and reported here were underwhelming to say the least.

I believe you will find this engine stronger than you might think once you open it up (mufflers & AC) and get the A/F in line. In fact, I may leave mine alone, as I consider the performance quite satisfactory as is.

I'd get the 103. You aint gonna be happy with that 96....
Not necessarily. The 103 adds maybe five HP according to Jamie at Fuel Moto, with all other hardware being equal, and he says it is not worth the money. I don't know about others, but I find the performance of the 96" very satisfactory. Of course, that is a subjective matter.

I have a friend with a 95" FLHTC with Black Widow BW39 cam, porting, and stock compression. He and I are about equal in performance.

I had the dealer add Rinehart TD's, s Stage I and a SERT before I picked up the bike. Like the sound, no heat issues - worked for me.

put a few hundred\thousand on it before you spend the $$ for the big bore kit....you may be suprised at the performance you get as someone earlier said once you let the engine breathe and open it up some.

I went AN Big Sucker Stage I, T-Max, and Rinehart TDs. No more heat issues, no more pinging (which was severe prior to the mods). Love the BS and the TMax. TDs look great, sound great (they are very loud), but they require spacing out the right floorboard and that has added vibration to my foot and makes me feel a little off center.

Hound Dog,

I dunno what yer definition of "pricey"is...hell, it's none of my business. But a Screamin' EagleÂŽ Street Legal Big Bore Stage II Kit for EFI Models - 103ci kit lists for $1,199.00 That includes the 255 cams and the Stage I air cleaner, along with slugs, jugs, clutch spring, etc. That's hella cheap horsepower in my opinion.

That is the kit I used, btw... I also added Rinehart True Duals ($899.00) and the way-cool AIM VP clutch ($245) I know, it adds up fast, but with stock heads, I'm makin' power and torque that pulls us around with authority. Total price was under $4K, which included the SERT ($440) and a couple hours on the Dyno. I think labor camein at $1K.

I am so pleased with my build that I would recommend it to anyone looking for more power on a budget. Good luck with your build. I know you will make the right decision.

I got my 07 FLHX with the 103 stage II /SERT as a package although it took a few weeks for SERT to come in.I would recommend this as it makes the bike have acceptable performance and diminished heat (SERT). I have a premium oil cooler , it goes on at the next oil change.

I would recommend you ride it for a while before doing anything. Like you, I had my upgrade path all planned out based on what I had heard about the 07s and my experience with the 06. I noticed it was hotter than my 06 during the first 100 miles. After that, it cooled down to the point it is not at all uncomfortable and no hotter than my 06 Deluxe with V&H, SE Air Filter and download. I have been riding in 95+ degree hot Texas heat and am not at all uncomfortable.

I had an 07 and I just ordered my 08. There are many differant ways to go and everyone will have their own opinion too!! I did the SE-103 big bore kit with everything, it is worth the money, but thats about $4,000+ by the time you add everthing together.
The Cam is the heart of the motor, it does make a big differance, not to radical, just a mild mid-range cam is good!! As far as duals, they do help alittle, very little, they do take away from the bottom end, but they will give you alittle more top end!!
V & H duals with their oval slip-ons are good with the 96 motor and sound good too!!RineHart true duals are alittle more $$, they will perform better, I am just not a lover of their sound, some people like it, but they have alittle bit differant sound to them, not as deep as the V & H's.

The SE-103 big bore kit is a good up-grade, but if you want to only spendso much, this is probably the best bag fora budget improvement, Just my opinion[sm=smiley20.gif]

SEhigh flow air cleaner
SERT (definitly)
Cams (SE-255's or SE-258's)
V & H duals w/ V & H oval slip-ons
Better oil, lots of after market motorcycle oils out there are much better!!

Also, you can call around to differant bike shops and dealers and ask one of the service guys for alittle advice, sometimes they like to give their opinion and you can just get some ideas. Ask any engine guy and he will tell you that the cams will make a big differance and is worth the $$.Alot will have differant opinions on which cams to use, but they will usually explain why!! There are manydifferant ones to choose from, I just stayed with the SE ones!!

Good Luck,
Mike
