Which way to go?
I have been reading the posts here for @ 6 months and decided to ask a couple of questions. First I have an 07 Road King Classic that has some of the symptoms I read about. The bike hasn't given any trouble at all and I have about 5,000 miles on it. It is all factory stock.
OK, first one is, if I leave the stock mufflers on, what can I do about the excessive heat? I am fairly happy with the way it runs and it gets 42-45mpg with 2 people.
Second one is, I thought about going with true duels but from what I'm reading I'm not seeing much gain in performance?
I came off a Goldwing to get this bike. The Goldwing is a great bike, but I got tired of all the plastic. I had a FLHS Evo back in the early 90's. What a difference in the 07. Its a great bike and I love it.
I will probably do the IDS installas well. And the last question is, since I do have an 07 would you get the extended warranty? I don't ride it easy, but I don't abuse it either. Well, not much.
Thanks
Get rid of the heat? True duals, race tuner (Sert, commander etc). You bike is running lean from the factory because of EPA reg. You will loose a little in gas milage but so what. You like good sounding pipes or quiet pipes either way you can have it. Pending on the pipes average around 2K to 1K. I like Rineharts good sound but not too loud. Vans Hines are louder.
Your power with Rineharts should actually be better along with the race tuner. You will not feel like your world has changed but it should be better.
True Duals along with the rest of the STAGE 1 will improve this issue... To even more improve this would to go to a GOOD SYN oil like AMSOIL or MOBIL 1 this will futher reduce the heat build-up
But doing the complete Stage 1 - YOU WILL improve the over all performance by 15 - 20% without a major dump in fuel mileage and it will address some of the excess heat build up
If you DO NOT plan on doing any other performance up-grades then I would recommend the following
True Duals (there are many to pick from the FAV on this forum seemd to be Rineharts (but these are a bit loud)
Air Kit - Ness Big Sucker
Fuel Management System: a simple V&H FuelPak (User Friendly and works GREAT & installed and set-up by you in 30 min or less)
I'm Running:V&H Fuel Pak - Samson Slip-ons - Ness Big Sucker and average 42+ MPG (and I like to go faster then some) - Complete install time less then 2 hrs doing it yourself...
I have also changed to Amsoil in all 3 holes and have installed RJ's Orignals Saddlebag Shields - I live in the Palm Springs area where in the summer time it's nice to see a cool day of 115 degrees...
The Bike Runs STRONG and have removed 80% of the heat build-up even inthe summer hot months...
You can control the heat pretty well with a change to good synthetic oil and a fuel tuner of some sort.
True Duals will help with heat and sound , but the stock pipes are better for overall performance and economy.
The IDS would be a nice mod for your bike.
Warantee coverage is always a gamble , extended coverage is up to you.
If you like your dealer and trust them , you might ask them what mods would be best to retain your coverage.
I put on a big sucker air filter and started jetting up the bike when I got it. (fuel management)
The performance and mileage went up a little and the heat went down as well.
You could try the RJS originals , air cleaner , and fuel management , and let it go at that.
You might be surprised how much better and cooler it runs.
Mick
