Crank position sensor problems
I think he means he'd like to get this problem solved before he begins a pre-planned major undertaking.
I can't imagine replacing a CPS that's working fine. If you're nervous about its failure, buy one just to have it ready.

it started backfiring then went into limp mode and then shut down and wouldn't start fortunately I had it in the garage before it completely shut down when I pulled the crank position sensor it was melted and I could see the magnet on the inside. After replacing the sensor and getting it plugged in which is no easy task because of the oil cooler on my bike, it now runs for about 15 seconds and then shuts down again but it will start each time. I figured there was some trash in there from the melted housing on the previous sensor and I can see into the hole a little bit so I grabbed a Q-tip and went fishing and couldn't pull any trash out of the hole.
The alphabet would help. I am assuming 2006 ultra has i at end of it, but I don't know for sure.
Run for short time makes me think running out of fuel, but no reason to think that. Good point, what was it doing before you replaced?
IMO, bike is 18 years old, I am not afraid to throw parts at it, in the name of maintenance. In the industry I work in, for sake of reliablilty we replace before it fails, before it leaves you waiting for hours for a tow, late for work, or cop talking to you. That said, I have no clue why it would run for 15 seconds. Usually run is run.

backfiring and coughing, then limp mode, and then once in the garage and shut off it would not start again

Are you sure it's melted and not "ground down" by the flywheel hitting it....? I hope it wasn't "ground down", but just wanted to ask.....
IMHO, if there was any trash from the melted CPS, it was probably washed down into the bottom of the cases....
