speaker question
Why are the rear speakers different than the fronts on the Ultra? Can't you use 4 front speakers for better sound quality? It always seems as though the speakers offered for the rears on our bikes is of a lesser quality. Curious why. Seems to also be the case with aftermarket replacements as in the Hogtunes and J&Ms.
This also confused me yesterday when I recieved my Ultra sound kit, it comes with the 5.75 ohm (pre HK Radio)speakers for the rear.
I thought I got the wrong kit.
I'm wondering if I'm better off putting the stock fronts (2 ohm)in the rear pods.
Maybe we can get Pez on here to explain it to us?

I cannot speak for other companies, but here is how we do it.....
Our original run ofspeakers fit both front AND rear locations on Ultras. Then, sometime in 04, HD changed the rear speaker boxes making them slightly smaller and our speakers would no longer fit as the magnet was too big. HD didnt show a new part# till 05. At that point we knew we would have to offer a speaker with a smaller magnet to fit ALL HD rear boxes.
We could have easily left the current speaker alone and offered a second model for rears only. Instead we took advantage of the extra mounting depth in the fairing and put on a larger magnet. I need to assure everyone that themagnets on our rear speakers offer more than enough magnetic field for that speaker. The reason we put a way larger magnet on our fronts is, that once the speaker has "consumed" the magnetic field it needs, the rest of the magnet is no more than a mass that acts as a heat sink to keep the inerts of the speaker cooler. On a 2 speaker only bike, the speakers tend to get driven harder so the extra mass helps with reliability and helps us justify a 20 year speaker warranty
Our rear speaker boxes that come with our Ultrasound kit WILL hold our front speakers. Reason for this is for the guy who already had our front speakers and adds the rear speaker kit. Our amp always runs the front speakers that come in the kit, and the radio runs the rear speakers. If a fellow has an 06 or newer bike and has our 2 ohm front speakers, he simply takes them out and puts them in our rear speaker boxes and takes the 0914 speakers that come in the kit and puts them in the front--they get run off the amp. The intent of this is so no customer has ever made a redundant purchase and he is never "forced" to buy all 4 speakers as part of the kit.
If a guy buys our Ultrasound kit with the second set of speakers ( our 4 speaker kit/amp in one go) we always send the smaller magnet 1017-AA or 1120 "rear" speaker. The rear boxes bolt to the tour pak, so the speaker mounted in the box is a "sprung" weight. Since, other than cooling there is no difference in the front or rear speakers, we send the lighter speaker to keep that sprung weight down. The chances of our front speaker/rear pods ever cracking the tour pak are so minimal its silly, but why take the chance?
There seems to be some questions on how our Ultrasound system works. If you goto www.hogtunes.com/ultrasoundoverview.pdf you can read a thorough "white paper" on the product and how it integrates into the bike
As always--here to help...PEZ
