Here is my take, and if you crash and helmet takes a hit, really need to replace the helmet.
So there are light weight Dot approve helmets on the market to begin with that are not much, and if your going for final lightest of dot.Snell approve helmets, then carbon fiber hand laid helmet may be the ticket, so long as you don't mind spending the $1K plus is going to cost.
Note if you find a hand laid carbon fiber helmet for less $1k, its a fake , with fake Dot or SNELL stickers on them to boot.
Hence a great deal of the time, not even real carbon fiber, but just hydro-dipped to look like carbon fiber, and not even tested to be able to get a legit dot or Snell rating on them as well.

FYI, helmets are not "approved", the manufacturer of a helmet claims compliance with published DOT standards, and there is very little compliance testing done.
