Default Shift issue

Hey guys!! I have put a few thousand miles on my 03 ultra classic so far this year, since changing oil in all 3 holes. I hadn't had any issues, but I noticed that my friction zone was a little further out. I hopped on the bike this morning to ride to work, pulling it out of the garage fine. I left it running, sounded fine. I hopped back and went to hit 1st, couldn't shift out of neutral. I tried hitting 2nd, same. I shut it off, and rocked it back and worth and felt some movement, and tgen it shifted. I started it up, and took a little trip. It sounded like it sounded different, from the drivetrain. My question, could the clutch being out of adjustment cause the driverrsin noise? I will adjust the clutch tomorrow and see, but was curious if anyone has had this. Thanks!

Did you fill the primary with fluid, with bike level on lift, to this point?

Fluid higher than that in the primary, is going to cause striction problems between the plates, and clutch will never release correctly.
Also, same problem can happen if the fluid being used, is to thick and to the correct level.

Fluid lower than that point, then the discs are at the mercy of the reduced amount of fluid being thrown up in the primary to keep the discs lubed, or can end up with heat problems on the discs.

So oil level in motor, bike on jiffy stand,
primary and trans fluid levels, bike level on stand.

And don't trust the manual on amounts in the primary, since have seen a few of them wrong, so use the above the diagram for primary fluid level and again, bike level, not on jiffy stand.

And for good measure, what fluids used for three hole change, and weights of each.

In addition to the suggestions posted by Dano523, adjust the clutch and the clutch cable.

i used Bel-Ray's vtwin motor oil, there transmission oil, and their primary oil in the primary. I put the recommended amount, so I will check that. Thanks fir the suggestions.

To add, when you put the trans fill plug back in, make sure to aim the fill tip of it, towards the inside of the cover, not back towards the center of the trans.

On cable clutches, the clutch cable dam near runs down the center of the opeening for the plug, and you need to thread the end of fill plug gauge so it goes in with the its end between cover and clutch cable to clear the cable.

Get ithe wrong way, and will bind up the clutch cable and end up snapping the gauge part off the fill plug.

Ok guys, I jacked the bike up and checked it out. The clutch was out of adjustment. Now I have another question, how can adjust the cable so my friction zone is earlier in the release of the lever? Seems like it's on the back side of the release. Thanks!!
