I am getting near retirement and consdiering purchasing a "classic " bike. I currently have two twin cam HDs. HD with an EVO motor is a possibility for the purchase. I am good with a wrench and have the tools to do most work (not strong in electrical). Was there a best year for EVO touring HDs that had most of the bugs worked out? Thanks for the help!

Would go for latest year model evo (last year for evo in the touring model was 1998 ), and although MM FI is not the devil, would suggest you go with CV carbed motor if not computer tech savvy.

I bought an Evo Dyna last year, did a bunch of research and many said the last 96-98 Evo's were the best due to the various improvements plus better parts availability. Got lucky and found a '98 I'm very happy with. FWIW the clutch spring plate (AKA grenade plate) went away that year.

Having just sold my '94 FLHTCU (with an engine I rebuilt myself at 100,000 miles), I'd agree that '96 or newer is best. The newer fairing was introduced that year; it's much easier to deal with and has many more parts available for it.
Also, having owned a TC with the MM injection, I'd recommend avoid that if at all possible.

I’ve had a 92 FXRT/RLE for 27 years, it has 50,000 miles and I’ll ride it anywhere. Last year we did Pikes Peak and back to Fla, next year it’s going to St.Paul and back.
‘EVOs are great engines with gobs of personality.
I replaced the gasgets on the top end so I can use Syn3. The bike always puts a smile on my face.
