As the title says, I have a friend with a 2004 FLHTC; recently, when rolling on the throttle, he experiences sputtering and hesitation, but only on an intermittent basis. Otherwise, the bike runs fine.
Having experienced these symptoms on my own bikes in the past, my guess is it's a bad fuel pressure regulator which will eventually get worse.
Any thoughts?
On my 03 it was the wires to the front injector getting pulled when accelerating. It eventually turned into a full misfire. There was no check engine light until the front cylinder stopped firing completely.
Feel along the front injector wires close to the injector and check for a narrow spot in the wire where the copper is broken inside the insulation. You can also try wiggling and gently pulling the wires with the engine running to se if the cylinder cuts out.
You can buy a pigtail at Napa that will let you extend the wires a tiny bit so they don't get pulled anymore.
