A thought on the brake light socket. Not sure why it would have melted (could have been due to the brake light stuck on and the extra heat) but it could have melted the brake and tail light wires together causing the brake to stay lit?
Thanks guys. I swapped the relays snd had the same issue. Unfortunately I didn't look at the bulb while I pulled the relay out. I will check tomorrow. Thanks for the diagrams also. Much appreciated 👏
Pull the brake light relay and leave it OUT. Check for the brake light. If it is not on, the problem is in the relay CONTROL circuit, likely one of the brake light switches. If the brake light stays on, you are getting 12 volts to the brake light AFTER the brake relay. I suppose it is possible, if the socket is melted, that the run voltage is being fed to both filaments, but I have never heard of that happening before.
Thanks to all for their input and help. I suspected that old socket because of the way it looked. Burnt up. The price of a socket wasn't far for the price of a led smoked lens so that's what I bought. It works great and looks good. It has integrated turn signals that look cool but putting more trust in people not running into me isn't one of my strong points so I rehooked the original. Maybe later I'll have both running. I did break the front switch reinstalling the brake lever. Didn't use the cardboard trick which keeps the handle from contacting the switch when reinstalling but oh well. New switch today and solder up wires instead of tear down. Slight downfall. Now I want all smoked led lights on the RoadKing. Looks great 👍. Thanks again. New led. Old defective socket.
There are several "shade tree" fixes for a broken brake light switch button that could have saved you the price of the new switch and the work to install it. Undoubtedly, the new switch is the best fix, just cost and labor intensive. I believe the fixes are covered in the Tech and Mechanical forum.
