So, you do need the isolator?

I would say you do. Tapping into the existing wiring for the trailer lights would put too much of a load on it. You might not blow a fuse, but frequently you end up with both the bike and trailer lights really dim.

Hey thanks, kinda the way I was thinking also. Thinking some more... and the trailer I have bought is an alumna out of Ia. They have a round 5 connector for the trailer I have a pigtail for the bike... Don't really like the idea of splicing into the bike electrical for this, would like more of a plug and play type of thing. Do you know where to go to find/locate one. And thanks again.

I don't have the link, but if you go to JP Cycle and do a search in the harley section for trailer wiring harness they have a connector that goes between your main wiring and the harness that goes to the rear end of the bike. They added an additional set of wires with individual plug connectors that you can wire into with the trailer lights. If you don't use the trailer very often you can just unplug this insert and totally remove the trailer wiring harness so you don't have to leave it hanging on the bike when not in use. I haven't decided if I'm going to use this or not, but it would remove the fear factor of splicing into the bike's wiring.

I put a Bushtec hitch on my '07 UC. it has a removable stinger (like a auto/truck), so I can take it off when not needed. I pull a Bushtec trailer with it with no problems what so ever. Any work on the bike with the dealer, I just remove the stinger and haven't had any problems with warranty work with the dealer.

i built my own receiver style hitch for my 08 road glide. built a cargo basket i can plug in and carry a small ice chest when i want it. didn't know if exhaust would warm the chest or not when i built it but it dosn't. used it on a recent 2600 mi. trip.

I used to pull an Aluma trailer, made in Iowa (Go Hawks!). Nicely made and very sturdy, pulled extremely well and has independent torflex axles (very nice). I liked it but do admit it had the styling of 1980 Volvo.
Hitches, definetly buy the Hitch Doc hidden receiver style. ALL chrome, solid as a rock and installs easily. Actually adds to the look of the bike when the receiver is taken down and out.
I used the J&P (another Iowa company by the way) harness, plug and pull! LOL
