I bought a 2022 Street Glide back in November 2024 from a private owner with 600 miles on it. Only rode it around the block so far(winter upstate NY). During the ride I noticed no 1st gear indicator light (intermittent) sometimes 2nd and the rest were all okay.
Bike starts in neutral and the green N light is on. Shift 1,2,3 etc. ... no indicator light with engine running sitting still. ABS and traction control lights flashing.
Bike starts in gear with clutch pulled in.
Neutral safety switch connections are clean and tight.
I have read about some people having to replace hand control switches. Because of the weather I cant ride and see if the cruise control works.
Does the bike need to be ridden for gear position indicator to display?
Explanation: The gear selected indication is CALCULATED by the ECM by comparing engine rpm and transmission output shaft rpm. When the bike is stationary, there is no transmission output shaft data for the computation so there is no indication. When rolling, with the clutch pulled in and the rpm ratio doesn't match any programmed ratio, the display will go blank even though the transmission is still in whatever gear. As a curious factor, by slowly playing the throttle while rolling and with the clutch pulled in, you can make the display show different gear selections even though the transmission is in only one particular gear at the time.
In either '24 or '25 the system was changed. The new bikes use a position switch in the transmission that mechanically senses which gear is selected. I have no direct experience with that system but ASSUME it will show what gear is selected at any time, whether moving or not, clutch in or out.
The ABS system must have rolling data to complete the self test program at start-up. With a properly functioning system, the blinking will stop once the bike is rolling above about 4 mph. (This is from memory, more accurate information is in your owner's manual.)
If you have a security FOB, READ YOUR OWNER'S MANUAL about how to set a PIN in the security system, it is only a matter of time before either your FOB battery goes dead or you are parked in an area of radio interference and your security system won't allow you to start your bike. On this and other forums, there are frequent desperate appeals for help made by phone when the FOB fails and the owner is clueless about the PIN and how to use it. Far better to have a PIN and know how to use it than having to pay for a tow to get back to civilization.
FYI....in the back of the owner's manual there's a punch out wallet card that you record the PIN code on. It includes the starting procedure to start the cycle "manually" with the PIN........probably wise to fill it out and keep it in your wallet.....THEN TRY IT to make sure you can do it.
(some HD dealers have extra PIN wallet cards to fill out and keep in your wallet)
