Faring wiring issues
Greetings,
I need advice. After I changed fluids & rode for the first time this season the bike—a 2013 Electra Glide Classic in Upstate NY—seemed fine, except the oil pressure gauge wasn't working. I checked the sender, thought the issue was it, so I replaced it. Still not working. I took the faring apart to check the gauge & wiring, only to find rats in my garage had made a nest inside, mainly on the left side. Some of the wires had been chewed, but not all. It was difficult to trace out the particular wires that connected to the oil gauge, but when I disconnected the plug from the gauge end & connected a meter I got a 12 volt reading after I switched on the ignition (this is not from the light, which connects with a different circuit), & I presume this means the wiring from the sending unit is intact & my problem is a bad gauge. I want to be certain because from what I've been able find online most of the replacement gauges available are pressure gauges & not electrical & the few that are are a bit pricey.
Is there a way to test the gauge itself before replacing it?
I have the service manual, but the wiring diagram isn't of much practical use. There are only a couple of wires actually separated as a result of the rat damage, & I'm not aware of any other deficits in function other than oil pressure gauge. Still, I don't want to leave damaged wiring (some of these may connect to the sound system which I never use). But is there a more practical resource for tracing out the wiring & its individual functions?
TIA
