I just let mine run down and then clean up with greased lightning or 409. Shoot, it just might lube some of the lower areas too. Better than rust.
I agree just drain it, spray it with some degreaser, spay it off with the hose. Then wash the rest of the bike. Most of the time I will flatten the oil filter box and drain as much as I can into the oil pan first too.
Alright... Who also use K&N Oil Filters??
I know I do!!!! Much easier to get on & off then the HD oil filter!!!
I put the 2-liter bottle under my filter, poked a hole in the bottom with a screwdriver and let it drain, then another hole in the side to unscrew it since I didn't have an oil filter wrench. 2-liter bottle worked great. Then, as Pappy recommends, I replaced my old filter with a K&N. Next time removal will be a lot easier! Gotta love that nut on the end.
I've got an 03 EG and just use a piece of cardboard....the price is right. Loosen the oil filter, but do not turn it to the point oil drains out. Bend the cardboard into a shape that will fit around the filter (making kind of a trough if you will). Place the cardboard trough under the filter. Now slowly loosen the filter and let the oil run down the cardboard trough into the drip pan. (Yep, cardboard trough has to be long enough to reach out the side over to the top of a drip pan). Simple and disposable which works for me!
