I believe the ‘Oil’ should be around 230 degrees F or less.

That's the typical temp you'll see bantered about...

If you drive in 100° weather or a bunch of stop & go traffic in high temps, don't get an oil temp gauge...

Or if you get one, don't look at it...

The MOCO installed an oil temp gauge on my 2012 FLHX. It's called EITMS.

The bike notifies me when she's hot. When that happens, and I can't get on a long stretch of road to cruise and get her to cool down, I'll find a place to pull over and let her cool off. Preferably in the shade somewhere that I can get a cool drink for myself.

I keep the engine oil changed at proper intervals, and try not to worry too much about engine temps.

Flick the aux swirch and activate my new to me oil cooler fans on my new to me oil cooler!
But your point is taken - you really can't see those temp dipsticks on the move.
Neither an in line gage near the oil cooler.
I guess the best would be replacing the air temp gage with an oil temp one.

If you’re really concerned about engine temps, I suggest getting Cylinder Head Temp gauges. You can find relatively cheap ones that have a sensor that goes under the base of the spark plug which I’ve used in the past, or you can get really good ones that require machining of the heads to install the sensors.

Here is a video that explains "how hot is too hot" for oil. It's more for NASCAR, but shows that cool oil is more dangerous than hot. Very interesting with the Oil Geek:

As I'm already using the diagnostic port harness plug for my Koso gear position indicator (what a sissy right). An automatic thermostat would have been nice but also swaping out the outside air temp gage with a HD oil temp gage so I can know when to turn it on.
Can't have everything.
Now I'll have no way to know how hot or cold it is outside while I'm sitting on my motorcycle.

However the aux switch also activates the auxiliary power outlet cigarette lighter type thing in the touring pack so there is that problem.
