I love my SG and I came from an '88 FXRS. As for the windshield, it's debatable if you want to change, but the best thing you can do for yourself is install the fork baffle. That gets rid of 90% of the buffeting people complain about. I actually did change to a 6.5" windshield, but only because I wanted to run a windshield bag.
I rented several diffenent bikes before buying the SG. The only thing that took some getting used to were the floorboards. All my previous bikes had pegs. I have gotten used to them but there are still days when I think that pegs would be better on this bike. It is a what I'm used to thing. Other than that, my SG has been a great bike so far.
RDM- You might want to look into the floorboard extensions that SOOS from the site sells, or Kuryakyn sells a set too. They move the boards out 3/4-1" from the frame and it really helps to make the boards a more natural fit.
Rent or test ride. SG is such a nice looking bike. Check out the pic gallery on here. Some of these guys have SGs that are beautiful. Especially the black pearl on that bike. Nice!
Actually, I have the 3/4" extension from SOOS and they are great. It just feels odd to me to have my foot an a flat board instead of a peg. I don't dislike the boards, they are just different than what I've had. After riding with boards for a while it will probably feel odd to ride a bike with pegs.
Had 4 HD's previously and several other makes, the 07 SG I have now is by far the most versitile and comfortable of them all. Great on the highway and lots of fun to throw around as the bike feals really planted at all times. Change out the windscreen for a taller one as suggested then go ride the things just love the road. Everyone tends to complain heat / noise / ride etc but honestly I think they have done a great job. Just my 2c
Bought my 07 SG on 7/30/07 when dealer was clearing out to make room for the 08's. I have put over 2200 miles on it so far and really enjoy the ride, thought I would keep my softail custom for intown short rides but I just can't resist the SG for every ride.
Just bought a used [2500 miles] 07 SG. My old bike, which is now the wifes , was an 03 fatboy. The SG is an awesome machine, fun to ride, tons of power and torque. I had to put a higher windscreen on it though, I couldnt take getting blasted with Alabama birds all the time.
