Default Transmission noise

When I first start up my 2006 Ultra and ride away the transmission shifts effortlessly and quitley. After the oil temp gets up to normal 200 to 210 degrees F. (normal for this time of year in up state New York)the trans then shifts with a very lound "bang". (My 2000 Ultra had a loud "clunk" when I shifted) I have tried shifting slower, faster, blipping the throttle to match engine speed with the trans speed and nothing seems to help. I still get a embarrisingly loud "bang" when either upshifting or downshifting. The bike has 2,400 miles on it and the warranty is about to expire. I'm on a trip (the first one on this bike) and am concerned about present and long term reliability. I took it to a small dealership yesterday and he said he didn't know enough about transmssions to be of any help. Any suggestions?? Thanks Ralph

What tranny weight oil are you runnin? Sounds like to me you might be runnin a lighter weight. Keep in mind when these get warmed up they do get a bit noisy. My 98 RK was lound when it shifted. So too is my 07 RG when things are warmed up.

same thing happens on my 08 RK. The colder the weather the quieter the shift. As soon as it warms up, it bangs away. Harleys have always done this, at least the ones I've owned. I've heard on this forum once you put synth in the trans everything gets better.

Ditto... I had the same issue. Switched to 90-140W Mobil Syn gear oil. No more clunk and a lot less whine. It also helps to tell yourself that the clunk/whine is due to Harley being so much heavier duty than the metrics.... ok, try drinking a few beers and telling yourslf that. Enough beer an it works... trust me....
