"Do not plan on riding this route anytime soon. I just completed the Skyline Drive route on September 8, 2007. The Park Service has graveled 20 miles of the route. It is treacherous at best. The Park Service deserves a black eye for this blunder. Several injuries or deaths caused by the gravel will be their wake up call." - Joe (9/12/07) Can anyoneelse confirm this was headed this way in october
I can't speak for its condition today, but I would not recommend the road based on my experience in 2001. After riding up the Parkway for 400 miles we found the Skyline Drive a disappointment. The speed limit was 35mph, cost $5 toll, and the scenery an anti-climax compared to the Parkway. On our next trip to the area we will avoid it. I don't know the route you are taking, but if going N-to-S, consider Hwy 219 in WV instead, then turn east to catch the Parkway on down, or vice versa going S-to-N. The Cumberland area of MD is also worth riding, even the Interstates in that area.

Just returned from our trip along the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway. Both roads were absolutely excellent and very well maintained. We arrived at the Skyline around 10 am or so on Monday Sept 24th so we didn't experience much traffic at all. Just other cruisers, all very polite of course.

Just as CMS noted, they did in fact sweep up the loose gravel, we actually rode past three tractors with the sweeper front attachments moving in the opposite direction ( they had fortunately already taken care of the southbound side of the road that we were traveling down. )

Anyone traveling there at this point needn't worry about the gravel. They were already painting the center line on the parts of the road they had completed sweeping.

No worries, it's a wonderful ride.
