[*]"Do not plan on riding this route anytime soon. I just completed the Skyline Drive route on September 8, 2007. The Park Service has graveled 20 miles of the route. It is treacherous at best. The Park Service deserves a black eye for this blunder. Several injuries or deaths caused by the gravel will be their wake up call." - Joe (9/12/07) Can anyoneelse confirm this was headed this way in october
Rode it north to south over the labor day weekend and miles 75-95 or so were loose gravel. Treacherous is an accurate description. (It was noted on a sign at the toll gate, but what are you going to do.. turn around?) Realize I picked a bad weekend, but dang!... even without the gravel that road was no fun at all. Scenery was great, but the buses (think greyhound) and folks who can't wait to pull out in front of you so thay can go 15MPH then 30 then 25 then 50while they take in the sights were nerve wracking.
Did see a couple of bears so that was pretty cool.
Overall, SLD (without the gravel) is a nice roadif you like scenic overlooks, but for riding go when it is less crowded. There are much better roads to ride south and west.
Yes, I went through on Aug. 30, from North to South. The ride was awesome, but the last 25 miles or so were covered with very loose gravel. There was nobody on the road, so me and my buddy were going a little faster than we should have. We had been driving on it for miles, but came to one section that hadn't been rolled enough, and both of us nearly wiped out.
If you ever go, try to go during the week! Much quieter.
Last Sunday rode from Front Royal to Big Meadows. Did not notice any gravel on that section. Turned around at Big Meadows and took 211 W exit to Luray.
Please do report back, i have a weekend camping trip planned for the two wheeler in mid-October. Had plan to run the full length, hopefully it will be paved by then.
Hey, I called Skyline Nat. Park. They said the gravel road is actually (and I forget the proper name) gravel covered in a thin tar. The excess gravel will be broomed off this week and the lines will be painted on the 24thof this month.
