Default Fork oil

I now have 13,000 on my 2005 egc and I never changed the fork oil at my 10k service. I was told that changing the oil is pretty important.
How many that do their own services have changed the fork oil and really, how important is it?
I was told you basiclly have to tear down the frontend of the bike to change it.

I really don't know how important it is. I am not a mech. by any means. However I changed my fork oil when I did my chrome lowers. No doubt about it, you must tear down your front end. Also you have a fairing bike.

On my '01 EGS I changed the oil by opening the drain plug on onefork then adding a little air to the shock valve until the fork was empty then put drain plug back in then did the same to other side. To fill I removed the air lines at the top of the forks and made up a fitting with a mini funnel and line. Used a measuring cup to get right amount of oil and started pouring. Had to use the jack to raise and lower the bike to kind of suck the oil into the fork (next time I'll buy the mini vac from harbor freight because it took forever to get all the oil in).

Put your VIN and mileage in here and see what the service intervals are for your bike. My 20k mile service is coming up and I was wondering about the fork oil too. According to HD my bike only needs it serviced every 50k miles. Good news for me.

Fork oil, like any other oil, will oxidize with age, get dirty etc. I change mine at the suggested intervals. That said, I'm not sure I can tell the difference once changed!

When I had my independant mechanic service mine at 20k, he said it was time to change the fork oil.He told me it was pretty nasty when he changed it.

I have changed mine. Not to bad if you have a helper.

1. remove/drain old oil, both sides. reinstall drain plugs.
2. remove airvalve form fitting by the seat. Mine was one fitting, both sides.
3. put in recomended amount of oil in small container.
4. place vacuum pump onto air fitting by the seat. The fitting you use to check air pressure in front forks. Besure that you have removed the valve (step 2)
5. put hose into container that has oil in it. (step 3)
6. remove one drain bolt. hold other end of hose onto the drain hole.
7. have 2nd person activate vacuum pump until oil container is empty and the hose/oil person gets the drain plug reinstalled.
8. repeat for other side.
9. install air valve and pump to desired pressure.
10. RIDE
