Default changing fork sliders

Has anyone changed their lower fork sliders? I am changing mine Roadking lowers over to black and was quoted around $150 for labor ($50 hr). Thats not bad, but I have a hard time parting with money for labor. I'm just looking for any tips when doing myself.

Thanks

unless you have the right tools - the front shocks on these have the oil system that will "BITE" you if you try to take them apart with out the right tools... I am with you but here - I took mine to a friend who had the tool and knew what he was doing... After watching him... I am glad I paid him... I would have screwed it up good

He is right. My buddy works as a mech. at the HD Dealership and does work on the side. I asked him how much would he charge me to do my front end and he took a deep breath! He said until he got the right tools, he didn't want to mess with it. But truthfully I'm not ready to buy the front end kit anyway.

I'm thinking of buying the front end kit...an Indy here quoted my $200 if I brought the bike, $100 if I brought him the forks...I watched them replace the springs and stuff when I went to chrome, it didn't look too bad, but you need the tool...

Anybody see any DIY websites on the subject?
I'll do some searches and post if I find them.

Babs,

I have not...I have been asking about this over the past several months in anticipation of my 10K service, and now it is upon me. When I do it, I will make a DIY thread, with pics, for all others.

Not much help, though some as it's not the same forks...when I did mine, the whole fork came off without draining any fluid first...IIRC.

Here is the Fork Seal driver tool I was talking about:

http://www.pitposse.com/forksealdriver.html

Though I need to do some research to find out how big my forks are, I don't know if they are 39mm or not, and they sell different sizes.

Not sure what else I need yet.

You have 41 MM forks and see the other thread about the PVC piping used for drivers.

Bill,

If I want to use PVC pipe, do I need 41 mm PVC pipe on the OUTSIDE? This allows it to slide in and out of the INSIDE of the fork, right?

Or am I dumb?
